The Good Beer Show is the original beer related podcast on the internet. Every week, I drag my equipment down to one of the largest beer halls in the Midwest, the “Heorot” in Muncie Indiana and review micro, craft and imported beers. We feature Midwest music and most of the time the band joins us at the table for the fun. It might get a little out of hand at times but my friends and I have a blast. The Good Beer Show is also proud of receiving the 2005 People’s Choice Podcast Award for food and drink.

Alas, The Good Beer Show was not nominated this 2006 for a podcast award but all is not in vain. I regularly host a music podcast called Amped that has been nominated for the best podsafe music category. Also we have friends of the show that have made the cut this year. While all the other GBS cast members were enjoying the July 4th holiday, GBS Bob went on a secret mission to Barrel House Brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio. There he met up with the brewer, Rick DeBar, checked out the brewery and snagged samples of all their beers to be featured on this show.

Music for this show was by the Muncie rap group called “Bogardus“. Rick Dee joined the table to sample beer and describe what it is like to be the premier rap act in Delaware county. The music at the beginning of the show I talked over supplied by awesome cool dudes.

My take: When I lived in Muncie my friends and I would stop by the Heorot on the way home from work. We were young, but old enough to drink. When Heorot opened in 1995 they had 7 taps, no TV’s and none of the ‘Big 3’ beers on draft. Anyway each time we would go, I would always try some beers that I had never tasted before. The problem with doing that at Heorot is that every time I came, there were always more beers than a person could or should do in a sitting. I was blown away by not just their selection, but the quality. When I finally headed East to a new job in NYC, I didn't know what to expect. There are plenty of things (restaurants, clubs, hotels, etc) in New York City are overrated, but their local brews are not among them. Consider the fact that the city has been brewing since 1632, when North America’s first commercial brewery was built on what’s now Manhattan’s Stone Street. The NYC hit a brewing peak in the late 19th century when Brooklyn alone supported 48 breweries, and that was only half the city’s total. Then there was Prohibition and in the 1970's NYC stopped brewing all together. Ten years the city and boroughs finally got their mojo back and slowly start up again.

Jump to 2020 and now NYC is home to 38 breweries and growing. According to Paul Leone, executive director of New York State Brewers Association: "The brewers in the city are not only making great beer, but they are transforming neighborhoods and bringing back the brewing scene to what it once was before Prohibition." I know live in Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY. where I have access to several great breweries. Next door in Long Island City, Queens there are more. My favorite open less than a year is the Hammer Brewing Company which has already made quite the mark on New York’s brewing scene. The The beer list rotates regularly, so you shouldn't get too attached to a certain pour. I'm waiting for the return of the Flavor Gravy stout, which was purportedly named after the owners’ cat. It was at the Fifth Hammer this past summer that I learned about a website that sells round dog beds that look like large floor pillows. This bit of information was gleaned by a stunning woman who was sitting at a nearby table with several of her friends, one of whom was a co worker. Our tables joined and by the end of the evening I was i love. Well that's a bit of an over statement. Let's say I was smitten. Lianna was a dog lover like myself and when I mentioned that my rescued pooch, Buttons seemed to hate every dog bed I bought for her, Lianna said you should check out GoodnightDog and their dog beds. If you want a luxury dog bed for your dog this is the place to buy it. I didn't need a luxury bed, just a bed that my dog would sleep on. Well, one thing led to another and Lianna, her dog Pips now live with me and Buttons. Both dogs have dog beds from GoodnightDog. Lianna and I have just returned from a visit to Muncie to meet my parents. And my midwest friends and I introduced her to Heorot. She loved its medieval mead hall ambience and the hundreds of different bottles of beer from all over the world and craft brews from all over the USA. With its relaxed atmosphere, huge number of draft beers and a bottle selection that borders on ridiculous, piano, and where even dogs are welcome, Heorot is definitely my type of beer bar.

Not Known For Beer But Damn They Are Fine, But..

August 1st, 2005

This week’s musical guest is “Black Cloud Theory“. Josh, the singer joined us at the table for the show. This week’s beers were all from the same craft brewery, Kiuchi in Japan. We explored three of their products. The first one was a traditional IPA. Traci hated it. This beer is matured in cedar saki casks and the woody scent and taste was very pronounced. The second beer was a Belgian witbier. The spices were right for a witbier but extremely stronger then we are used to. The third beer was the table’s favorite. Along with traditional spices this beer sported both cinnamon and vanilla beans.

The GBS need to thank once again, Cavalier Distributing for the beer used on the show!

I would like to get into the top 100 this month. If you like our show, vote for us here.

Thanks to everybody who voted for us. I am still stunned. Good beer drinkers must be good voters too!

With my bandwidth problems behind me, the GBS is full steam ahead. I would like to get into the top 100 this month. If you like our show, vote for us here.

Show #35 recorded at 9:30 on Aug 1st.

I have few doubts that GBS will continue it’s rocket-powered ascention, and that few good beer / lifestyle podcasts will be able to match it.

Soon, the cries of the little children calling out for GBS will reach such a magnitude that they can no longer be stifled.

My god, the little children…

Also, the new album is complete. The master has been sent out for duplication and we should have the retail copies in 2-3 weeks. I will be sure to come in and give you a copy. Most places just get the demo.. I figured you would dig the entire album.

mYsTerY!

July 25th, 2005

The GBS was visited by Matt Dunn of indianabeer.com. This is the site to check out if you want to know where good beer is located in the Hoosier state. He brought the beer, played the music and fit into the show perfectly. Look for a GBS story at his site soon.

The first beer was an organic Dupont. This beer is called “Foret” in the states but in Belgium it is called “Moinette Biologique” The second beer of the evening was a cave-aged Ommegang from Cooperstown, New York. These two beers were supplied by World Class Beverages. We also sampled some of Matt’s homebrewed barleywine. It was fabulous!

I would also like to thank Basic Brewing and Seattle and Beyond for the promos.

I would also like the thank the guys at kickasspodcast for their help in snagging votes for us at podcastawards.com.

He comes from the forest deep, bringing beers of amber and magick. He has a bandaid on his right thumb from running around the pool too goddamned fast and falling ass over teakettle. But let that not dampen the mystery.

The barleywine was brewed January 13th, bottled in mid-March this year and it weighs in at 10.7%abv (I checked out my notes).

Is the aftershow going to be posted? I hope.

Mojo Music, Mojo Beer

July 19th, 2005

This is show number 33. Way back on my show #1, the first band, “Pray For Mojo” was my first band. They are back. After the show, my friend and pro soundman, Charlie, used the 3 condenser mics to capture a great recording of the band. It was a private little GBS party!

I would like to thank Matt from Cavalier Distributing for supplying the beer and joining us on the show.

The first beer was “Dark Star Porter” from BBC brewing in Louisville. The second beer was “Mojo” from Boulder Brewing company. Both beers were top notch.

I would like to mention that the beautiful Traci and I will be attending the 10TH ANNUAL INDIANA MICROBREWERS FEST in Broad Ripple the 30th of this month. All you Indiana listeners should really try to make this event. Info is here.

Eric Alexander Meets Two Dark Horses

July 19th, 2005

This episode’s artist was Eric Alexander and the Connection. His MySpace site is here. We drank 3 beers from Dark Horse Brewery in Marshal, Michigan. The first beer was their “Black Bier Ale“. This rates extremely high on ratebeer. The second beer was the “Raspberry Ale“. The last beer was a Belgian triple called “Sapien“. I would like to thank Mike from Dark Horse for the interview.

200 IBUs and Plan B Music

September 23rd, 2005

Show #42 starts out with a promo for “Skinny White Boy Kastpod“. This is a very well produced show and it is worth a listen. On show #42 I present to you some beer from Founder’s Brewery in Grand Rapids Michigan. The Heorot starting featuring this beer a month ago and I have been dying to do a show.

The first beer featured is “Red’s Rye“. This beer scores a solid 97 rating at ratebeer.com. I love dry hopped ales and this beer is unique. It is a deep red in color and the rye malt that is used creates a completely different spin on an IPA. This beer is brewed all year long by Founder’s and this is a good thing.

The second beer is a complete monster. IBUs or “International Bittering Units” is a way of measuring hop content in a beer. The “Red’s Rye” we drank first is a 70. The highest IBUs I have ever had was probably in the 120 range. “Devil Dancer” our second beer is a 200! Traci did not go bonkers like rest of the table over this beer but she hung with us. She is a trooper. My experience drinking this beer is the smell and taste of mango, papaya and some grapefruit. It is sweet and the 13% abv is masked. Tom liked it so much he did not want to end the show. He wanted to keep talking. “Devil Dancer” is a seasonal, limited quanity ale. Maybe Matt from Cavalier will chime in on a comment and tell us what package stores he shipped this to. That way some of my in-state listeners can experience “Devil Dancer“.

The article in which the GBS is featured is here.

The music for this week was by three artists. The music that started and ended show is “The Ride Theory” from Ontario, Canada. The second song was by Chance. This is leading up to the simucast that I will be doing for this artist on October 9th. The two songs between featured beers were from Thunderhawk. This is a great Muncie band that released a new album recently. The CD is packed with 21 tracks and it has been played on my ipod quite often. Check em out and buy a CD. It is a great deal on some great indie music.

Show #41

September 16th, 2005

The show starts out with 2 promos. The first is a new member of AMP, the “Hoo Hoo Nick Podcast“. The next promo is for an event that the GBS is going to be involved with, namely an internet simulcast of a concert of a west coast artist named “Chance“.

The musical guest are the two guys behind “Standard Recording” out of Indianapolis. This indie label has stuck with the GBS from the beginning and have supplied some great music. It was great to have Mark Latta and Kevin Phillips on the show!

The music for episode #41 was a sampler of some of Standard’s artists.

“Skeleton Key” by “Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos”

“Judi” by “Pravada”

“Don’t Go into the Woods” by “Calibretto”

“Rocketship Indiana” by “Everything, Now!”

The first beer was “Petrus Winterbier” from Bavik-De Brabandere.

The second beer was “Grotten Brown” from St. Bernardus Brouwerij. The Heorot drained 90 liters of this ale on draft this week. There are still bottles of this beer available.

Charlie Don’t Surf

September 8th, 2005

Magic Hat Brewery is from VT not CT. That is what you get when a person does a show without notes. Thanks James for catching that.

On show #40 we finished up the summer sampler case that Jay Card from Magic Hat Brewery so kindly sent. The first beer was called Hocus Pocus and it really did not do a thing for us. The Heorot’s favorite summer brew, Oberon, is in the same style and we all think of it when “American Wheat” is mentioned. The Gumballhead of show #38 did not help matters any.

The second beer, Number 9, fared much better. This was very interesting to me. The nose was definitely berry of some sort but the taste had no berry in my opinion. I like this better than the first one and I can see why it is one of Magic Hat’s best sellers.

The musical guest was Muncie’s own “Charlie Don’t Surf”. Frank Reber, one of the trio, joined us on the show and talked to Tom about his band. The band’s website is here.

Great show. I really liked the band, and Magic Hat is one of our favorite beers. My wife and I were introduced to #9 nearly 10 years ago on our annual visit to Mad River Glen in Vermont. I used to bring cases of it back home to NJ with us until their distribution expanded to this area. The tour is quite interesting. I believe that the owners are big New Orleans fans…

When we’re in VT I usually try to find local beers to bring home - and do a brewery visit. The last really good one I found was Rock Art Brewery (http://www.rockartbrewery.com/) in Morrisville. The Whitetail was very good.

I also recommend River Horse (http://www.riverhorse.com) - our local Brewery. I like every beer they make, but Hop Hazard and Belgian Frostbite are two of our favorites. The Trip3l Horse (spelled that way) is also quite good at 10%abv!

Great band, however maybe they should have checked the name of that CD first. It should be kvalitetsstøy, not stoy. stoy doesn’t mean anything. and if they want to spell it without the freaky ø, they should have used oe instead, so that would be kvalitetsstoey. Just my two cents.

My Drywaller Rocks!

August 26th, 2005

This show featured two beers from Bluegrass Brewing Company in Louisville KY. The first beer was their altbier. This type of beer is associated with the town of Dusseldorf in northwest Germany. It is an ale with the additional step of lagering. The estery smells a lot of the hop bitterness are removed during the process. The result is a very clean ale. The second beer was BBC’s American pale ale. This is one of Tom’s favorites and according to legend it is only $8 bucks a growler at the brewpub. Pack up your car and go! Thanks to Matt from Cavalier Distributing for the beer samples.

The musical guest is “Spitshine“. They should have a pressed cd out soon but if you go here and look for the guy that resembles the guy on the right, he will give you one. That’s what I call Muncie marketing…….genius!

Hats off to Fosco & Jack’s Kickass Podcast. They are the biggest supporter of the GBS.

If you want to hear a great podcast featuring Muncie talent go right here. Thanks Jason of Insomnia Radio.

On my quest of snagging more listeners, please vote for the GBS at podcastalley.

so, i heard, jeffreyT, that you used to hang out at dame leo’s? i wasn’t a regular there back in the day either. didn’t she go back to New Orleans? that was the last i heard early this year, i think, or maybe late last year. i ran into her at the gas station. i wonder if she’s ok if she went back…..
finally, what’s up w/the new bar going in? any launch date?

As far as I know Dame Leo and her son Josh were in New Orleans. No word on their well-being. Josh is a tough cookie and I have no doubt he would have got his mom out.
As far as the new bar I am assuming you are talking about “The Fickle Peach” on the west corner of the Rose Court. It was supposed to be opening by the time the end-of-summer jam was supposed to jam.

I heard another name was being tossed around for the bar. I think it was The Root Cellar. I guess we’ll find out when the sign goes up. This place isn’t going to be like the BBQ restaurant. I was in there last week and they are nearing completion. The place looks awesome, and it is primarily the result of a 3 man crew who has put in a ton of hours. As for the BBQ place, they have been given an ultimatum - either get open, or get out.

i heard it’s gonna have two main ‘rooms’ or something to that effect?

No longer named this by Brasserie Lefebvre it goes by two other names, Blanche de Bruxelles and Abbaye de Floreffe Wit. This Belgian wit was quite a bit spicier than Hoegaarden. My girlfriend, Vicki, who was not a beer drinker before she met me, loves the stuff. She went down after the show and bought another bottle. This beer was at least 5 years old and stood up suprisingly well. The last beer on the show was “Professor Gessers Mind Numbing Ale” from BBC. Beers #1 and #3 were supplied by GBS’s hero Mat at Cavalier Distributing.

For Show 86 the GBS plays some select cuts from BigBigCar and a sneek peek of Arrah and the Ferns. This Standard Recording artist just released a killer album called Limestone Throne/Kid Fight. We drink Shiner Bock, the most “have you had this” emailed beer on the GBS. We also sampled Jefferson Reserve Bourbon Stout on draft and toasted with Dark Lord Imperial Stout. Thanks to all the colorers that submitted artwork. All of them except one will be posted in the photo gallery soon!797669376_l.jpgBuy this album, 9 bucks (plus shipping)

For Episode 85 we recorded right on the bar at Three Floyd’s brewpub. Nick Floyd, the owner and brewer rolled out the red carpet and we had a wonderful time. We sampled Behemoth barleywine, Alpha Kong! and Oak-Aged Darklord. Pictures are here. Awesome Cool Dudes (pictured above) and Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos were the featured musical artists. The Save Awesome Cool Dudes website is here. You can also help out be buying a cd at the ACD website. JeffreyT simply loves the disk “Maxin´ and Relaxin´”.
